    Passive Fire Protection

Passive fire protection, sometimes known simply as PFP, is all of the fire safety aspects in your building that are in place all of the time and that don’t require any manual activation to do their job. These are most commonly structural elements and they help to hold back fire and smoke in an emergency.

At Surrey Tech Services Ltd, we provide passive fire protection services for businesses and organisations across London and the Home Counties – including Maidenhead, Guildford and Slough. For our expertise in this area, you need only give us a call.

The purpose of passive fire protection systems is to provide enough time for people inside a building to evacuate safely, with a secondary benefit of limiting the structural damage caused. You can also read about the legal requirements for PFP measures further down on this page.

    Passive Fire Protection Examples

Since passive fire protection is not something you have to interact with, it’s easy to forget about it. Here are some key examples of the systems and structures that form passive fire protection:

    • Fire doors – to hold back a fire and compartmentalise a building
    • Fire stopping – to seal off any cracks or openings through which fire could spread
    • Fire barriers – to cut off the spread of a fire through voids in the building’s structure
    • Intumescent paint – special paint that expands when exposed to heat to protect what it covers
    • Structural steel fire protection – crucial protection for the steel structure of a building to extend how long it can withstand fire before losing integrity

Is Passive Fire Protection A Legal Requirement?

Passive fire protection is a requirement of Building Regulations to ensure the correct construction processes are followed for new construction or renovations. It is also your legal duty to ensure you have taken all appropriate steps to protect those within your building as part of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Fire risk assessments can help to assess your systems and strategies, ensuring you are compliant with the law.
